Under the old roof

by Hesba Stretton

Introduction

The story of Abigail Thorneycroft who promised her father, on his death-bed, that she would try to buy back the houses he had built but has been forced to sell. She marries Richard Medlicott but when he dies, his son Dick (by a former marriage) lays claim to her house and turns out poor Abigail. She enters the workhouse and becomes reconciled, through her faith, to never returning to her rightful home. Dick becomes ill and Abigail takes pity on him and this leads to a reconciliation. Another good moral and religious tale from Hesba Stretton who manages to involve the reader in the terrible injustices of this world, but where there is always a chance for good to prevail.

Abigail Medlicott's cottage (Chapter 2) A lonely watch (Chapter 3) Thoughts of old days (Chapter 4) Workhouse days (Chapter 8)
