Notwithstanding

by Mary Cholmondeley

Introduction

This appears to have been the last book written by Mary Cholmondeley.

It is the story of Annette, who leaves the sanctuary of a home with her aunts, travels to Paris and finds herself in a situation over which she has little control. At the end of her tether she makes a major blunder but is rescued by a benefactress and she returns to her aunts' home in England.

There she enjoys a peaceful interlude in the village of Riff before her past steals slowly up on her through a series of coincidences.

The story contrasts the idyllic and humorous everyday village life with the threat of her secret being revealed and a will holds the key to her future.
