The City Of Hereford is the administrative centre of Herefordshire. The cathedral, dating from the 11th century, has a world famous chained library which includes manuscripts from the 8th century.
Thomas Traherne (1638-1674), metaphysical poet, was born in Hereford and bequeathed five almshouses, for the poor of the city, which stood in Widemarsh Street.
David Garrick (1717-1779), actor and dramatist, was born in Maylord Street and there is a plaque commemorating this.
The clergyman, naturalist and novelist, W.S. Symonds (1818-1887), who wrote two historical novels based in the West Midlands, was born in Hereford.
Elinor Brent-Dyer (1894-1969), a celebrated children's author, lived from 1933 until 1964 in Hereford, running The Margaret Roper School (until 1948). Her Chalet School series is her most famous work, and although set in the Austrian Tyrol, must have called upon her own experience as headmistress of her school in Hereford.
Norman Hidden (1913- ), a celebrated author and poet was educated in Hereford at Hereford Cathedral School from 1926-32 and has written poems about the area in his collection For my friends.
