Hanley

Staffordshire town, .

One of the six towns comprising Stoke-on-Trent in an area known as the Potteries, after the world-renowned craft of the district. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) depicted the area in many of his novels and renamed Hanley as Hanbridge. He was born at 90 Hope Street on 27 May 1867 and a plaque was placed on the house in 1932. The family subsequently moved to various homes in and around Burslem during his childhood.
