Shropshire village, 2 miles S of Pontesbury.
Small village lying in a hollow in the Shropshire hills, between Pontesford Hill and the Stiperstones. There is an attractive grouping of old cottages, farm buildings, church and seventeenth century manor house which will have changed little from when Mary Webb knew it. She called the place and surrounding district Bitterley in her novel The Golden Arrow 1916).
