Worcestershire town, 9 miles SW of Worcester.
A spa town on the eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills. It has attracted many visitors to take the mineral waters.
Among the literary figures that have stayed here are Thomas Gray (1716-1771), Sydney Dobell (1824-1874) and M.R. James (1862-1936). The Festival Theatre has a long association with the production of plays by J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) and George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950).
The poet William Langland (c1331-c1400) is believed to have been born in the area and educated at the Benedictine monastery, of which only the Priory Church remains.
The author and poet, Robert Conquest (1917- ) was born in Great Malvern, but spent much of his childhood in France.
