Catherine Milnes Gaskell

1857-1935

Profile

Writer of light works of fiction such as Episodes in the lives of a Shropshire lass and lad (1908) together with pieces about Shropshire; Spring in a Shropshire abbey (1905) for example. After her marriage in 1876 to Gerald Milnes Gaskell she lived at Wenlock Abbey and seems to have made her home a mecca for artistic and literary visitors including the American novelist Henry James in 1877, 1878 and 1882 and Thomas and Emma Hardy who signed the visitors book on August 13th 1893.
