Staffordshire village, 5 miles NNE of Uttoxeter.

George Eliot (1819-1880) called it "Hayslope" in her novel Adam Bede (1859).

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) lived at nearby Wootton Hall after leaving France in 1766 and wrote most of his Confessions (1781) here.
