David Edgar

1948-

Profile

Playwright. Born in Birmingham, he went to Manchester University to study drama. His writing career began as a journalist in Bradford and it was at this time that he started writing seriously for the stage in a radical style. His early works include The national interest (1971) and Dick deterred (1974). His first real success came with Destiny (1976) which explored British fascism. Further sophisticated writing quickly followed including Mary Barnes (1977) and a long dramatisation of Nicholas Nickleby (1981), lasting eight hours, for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He continues to write for the stage, radio and television and has taught at Birmingham University since 1989.
