E-books from Shropshire Libraries


Shropshire Libraries is providing a small selection of e-books by authors associated with Shropshire, or that feature descriptions of the area. These are either out of copyright or have permission from rights holders for them to appear here. The e-books can be downloaded free of charge and used for personal enjoyment with the only restriction that they should not be used for commercial gain. They are listed on this page alphabetically by author in two sections, Non-fiction and Fiction.

Vivien Bellamy

A history of Much Wenlock. Published 2001. The text of the original publication in which the author describes the way the town evolved over the centuries from its early Christian credentials through to becoming a place of some importance as a market town and borough. Its setting as a centre for agriculture, commerce, industry and culture are discussed.

Samuel Garbet

A history of Wem. Published 1818 but written around 1750. This was the first printed history of the small market town in north Shropshire. It is not an easy read but it does give a fascinating flavour of life at that time.

Fiction

Mary Cholmondeley

Moth and rust. Published 1902. A dramatic story including a promise made to a dying woman, a lost IOU, and the destruction of illicit love letters in order to keep a secret. Mary Cholmondeley's complex but short novel shows perhaps a slightly different perspective on life at the turn of the twentieth century.

Desmond Coke

The bending of a twig. Published 1906. Intended as a parody of the traditional school story, the book tells of the experiences of its hero, Lycidas Marsh, at Shrewsbury School and is based on memories of the author's own school days there.

Rosa Kettle

The Carding-mill Valley. Published 1882. The story of the Derinzy family of Hagleth Hall. Into their midst comes a mysterious stranger and his beautiful daughter, Violet who Hugo and Leo Derizny fall for. But Violet's father forbids her to mix with the family.

Henry Kingsley

Stretton. Published 1869. Six Shropshire lads are followed through childhood in Church Stretton and Church Pulverbatch, through college, into adulthood and to the mutiny in India. Their lives are contrasted with that of Eleanor, a feisty landowner, who is "married" to her 800 Shropshire farm.

Hesba Stretton

Under the old roof. Published 1882. The story of Abigail Thorneycroft who promised her father, on his death-bed, that she would try to buy back the houses he had built but has been forced to sell. Despite setbacks, including being banished to the workhouse, her moral and religious strength prevails.

Mary Webb

The golden arrow. Published 1916. The tale of a poor farming community around the Stiperstones area in Shropshire and their need for marrying "right and proper". Stephen and Deb search for the Golden Arrow, a mythological arrow said to bond couples together if found on Palm Sunday.
