The Literary Heritage website

Literary connections

The West Midlands region of England has given the world many great writers. This website has been developed to give background information about the people and places, including those featured in the West Midlands Creative Literature Collection held at Shrewsbury Library.

You may like to start to explore the site by going to the summary pages on either People or Places. From these you will be able to follow links that will expand on the literary, historical or topographical background as well as giving e-text examples of the works mentioned. There is a complete catalogue of e-texts available on this website. A range of themes have been identified and information has been collected together that may make your enjoyment of the literature more rewarding. There is also a timeline of people with literary connections with the region. Alternatively, either use the Google™ search facility on this page or go to the separate Search page where you can search by any word across the whole site (but excluding the full e-texts) courtesy of Freefind.com.

Accessibility has been an important factor in the design of this website. Access keys are available and you can read about them on the page about accessibility.

The e-texts available here are also listed on the Online Books Page at http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/ and on the Digital Book Index website at http://www.DigitalBookIndex.com

The project has been funded through the Big Lottery Fund's ground-breaking £50 million UK-wide digitisation programme which was designed to enable the learning materials and resources currently contained in galleries, communities, libraries, museums, universities and other centres of excellence, to be directly accessible to homes and communities via the internet.

Big Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for giving out half of all the Lottery funds for good causes and was created in June 2004 by merging the New Opportunities Fund and the Community Fund.

Read about this project, part of Digital Midlands, a free web resource exploring the unique cultural heritage of the English Midlands. It forms the regional contribution to the nationwide EnrichUK programme and the searchable portal, EnrichUK.net, links all 150 websites that have been supported by the Big Lottery Fund.
