1885-1939
Real name Henry Bertram Law Webb, husband of the novelist and poet Mary Webb and nephew of Captain Matthew Webb of Dawley (the first man to swim the English Channel). Henry Webb was a classical scholar and teacher, and at the time he met Mary was working on a volume of philosophic essays called The Silences of the Moon (1911). These were published under his own name, but after his wife's death he used the pen-name John Clayton for translations and for his own historical novels such as The Gold of Toulouse (1932), Dew in April (1934) and The Silver Swan (1939). He was tragically killed while climbing Scafell in August 1939.
