1907-1977
Author and journalist; although not Shropshire born he came to know and love the county and lived for some time at Lower Hall, Beckbury before retiring to Machynlleth. Wilfred Byford-Jones, who often used the pen name 'Quaestor', worked for many years on the Express and Star and Shropshire Star being associate editor of the former. He wrote many articles on Shropshire people and places, some of which were collected in his Severn Valley stories (1967). Before the war, a local best seller was his first collection of essays, Both sides of the Severn (1933) which was followed by The Shropshire haunts of Mary Webb (1948).
