Burslem


Staffordshire town, 2 miles N of Hanley.

One of the towns forming the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Featured as Bursley in Anna of the five towns (1901) by Arnold Bennett (1867-1931). He lived for brief periods in Dain Street and Newport Lane and attended the Burslem Endowed School from 1876. In 1880 the family settled in a house in Waterloo Road, Cobridge, a suburb linking Burselm with Hanley. This became a museum dedicated to the author. Arnold Bennett's ashes were placed in his mother's grave in the local cemetary.

The poet Pauline Stainer (1941- ) was born in Burslem.
