E.J. Burbury

Profile

Little is known of this West Midlands author, including her dates of birth and death.

Mrs. Burbury is possibly Edwina Burbury, wife of Thomas Potter Burbury. It is reported that Thomas Burbury ran off with Edwina's sister but the couple returned later to live in her house to avoid a scandal. As her husband's health was poor she began to write to support them all.

Most of her writings seem to have been published in the 1840s and 1850s. Her novel The Grammar school boys is dedicated to the headmaster of the Royal Free Grammar School of Shrewsbury, indicating her connection with the town of Shrewsbury. She thanks him for "the many kindnesses I have had the happiness to receive from yourself and family".
