Shropshire village, 2 miles S of Shrewsbury.
The area has many connections with the novelist Mary Webb (1881-1927) and the public library is named in her honour. It has a small collection of books, pamphlets and cutting about the author, provided by the Mary Webb Society.
Bomere Pool is a large natural pool lying to the E. of the A49, between Bayston Hill and Condover. Mary Webb used to spend much of her time at this once-secluded spot which is almost certainly the original of her Sarn Mere in Precious Bane (1924). If the spirit of the novelist still haunts the spot it is presumably horrified at the present use made of the pool for it is now regularly used for water-skiing. Lyth Hill was also a favourite haunt of Mary Webb and she lived here at Spring Cottage from 1917 until her death.
