Many of the short stories written by Mrs. Henry Wood were set in Worcestershire and featured a character called Johnny Ludlow, who purports to be the narrator. Other central characters include Squire and Mrs.Todhetley and Johnny's step-brother, Tod. Altogether some eighty Johnny Ludlow stories appeared over a twenty year period. Series 1, 2 and 3 were collected and published in book form during Mrs. Wood's lifetime, while the other three collections were appeared posthumously. Many of the early stories were extremely short and the tale would be completed in a single monthly issue. However, some later stories were longer and stretched to two, three, four, five or on one occasion to six issues. The lengthier tales are really short novels.
In an Argosy article written after her death, her son described what the Johnny Ludlow stories meant to his mother.
"...much as she loved Johnny Ludlow, and delighted in him; lived in the midst of this crowd of friends she had gathered about her, until their existence seemed to her a positive reality; she yet ever considered the writing of these papers as apart from her ordinary occupation--a rest and recreation from her other work."
On this page there is a list of all the Johnny Ludlow stories, in alphabetical order, together with their original date of publication in the Argosy magazine. Also shown is the volume of collected stories in which they subsequently appeared (two were never re-issued).
Where there are links, these are to etexts of these stories on this website. Please note that file sizes can be quite large as all the stories from a particular volume are grouped together in one file. They may take some time to open-up if you choose to read them online. Downloading for reading later may be the preferred option and this can be typically achieved by calling up an option box. If you have a mouse and it is configured for left click to select, right clicking the link may give you this option.
